The No.15/16 Kansas Jayhawks (30-11, 14-4 Big 12) defeated No. 20 Nebraska in a high-scoring affair, 9-7 on Tuesday night.

Nebraska got on the board first with a single out to left field in the second.

Kansas would respond in the bottom of the frame, with a Tyson Owens two-run double.

Josh Dykhoff would have a productive out in the same inning, grounding out to score Owens. The Jayhawks had taken the 3-1 lead.

Nebraska would retake the lead in the top of the third, 4-3, driving in three runs off two singles and a sacrifice fly.

Owens would launch a solo shot 419 feet to center in the sixth to tie the game at 4-4.

In the same inning, Dykhoff would hit a two run homer to right center to give Kansas the lead once again, 6-4.

Tyson LeBlanc recorded his third triple of the season in the seventh to score Cade Baldridge.

A two RBI homer from Augusto Mungarrieta in the same frame would blow the game open, as the Jayhawks extended their lead to 9-4.

A three-run eighth for the Huskers brought Nebraska within striking distance, but wasn't enough to overtake Kansas.

Tyson Owens went 4-for-4 with three RBI.

Kannon Carr got the start, throwing 2.2 innings and allowing four hits with four earned runs.

Toby Scheidt got the the win, pitching 3.1 innings with no hits and five strikeouts.

Riane Ritter pitched in relief, before Boede Rahe claimed his sixth save on the season. Rahe threw two innings and allowed just three hits.

The Jayhawks will make the short road trip to Manhattan Friday to take on K-State in the Sunflower Showdown. First pitch for Game 1 is set for 6 p.m.

Another warm day today with temperatures in the upper 70s to low 80s. Lows tonight will drop down into the middle 50s with increasing cloud cover. We continue to stay dry for the first half of the week with plenty of sun. Wind will be from the southwest at 15-25 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.

Temperatures will be slightly cooler Wednesday, but still warm for this time of year, with highs in the upper 70s and clouds building in throughout the day. Our next system will arrive on Thursday. All of northeast Kansas is under a slight risk for severe weather Thursday as a cold front sweeps through the area. Best timing for storms looks to be in the afternoon and evening. All hazards are possible, but there still is some uncertainty regarding cold front placing and timing which could determine the extent of the severe potential across the area.

Showers may linger into our Friday morning. After that system moves through, a somewhat cooler shot of air will arrive dropping temperatures back down into the lower to middle 70s. That cooling trend will carry over into the new week with highs Monday around 70°.

K-State baseball (26-15, 9-9 Big 12) defeated Grand Canyon 8-3 on Tuesday.

The Lopes opened up the scoring with a two-run home run to grab the early 2-0 lead.

Cadyn Karl answered with a long ball of his own, a solo shot, to cut the GCU lead in half.

The Lopes would reinstate their two-run lead with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second.

A single through right from AJ Evasco scored Grant Gallagher in the third as the 'Cats still trailed, 3-2.

Dee Kennedy broke the junior single-season home run record in the fifth, with his 17th of the year, to tie the game at 3-3.

The BatCats were hot in the sixth, with a single from Karl. Bear Madliak would score from second on a throwing error.

Gallagher got walked with the bases loaded, bringing in Micah Kendrick to score.

Kennedy knocked his third hit of the day with an infield single to score Shintaro Inoue,

A fielder's choice would bring Gallagher home to score what would be the game's final run.

Kennedy and Karl each finished the day with three hits, driving in two and one RBI, respectively.

Austin Haley got the start, pitching two innings and giving up three earned runs on three hits.

Cohen Feser takes the win, throwing four innings. He allowed one hit and recorded two strikeouts.

Adam Arther and Miles Smith also pitched in relief.

K-State will travel back home to Manhattan, where they'll prepare to take on No. 15/16 Kansas in the Sunflower Showdown starting Friday. First pitch for Game 1 is set for 6 p.m.

Emporia State University's special collections and archives opened its doors Tuesday, April 21 to Across Town, Across America: Emporia on the National Stage exhibit. Working for you, 27 News took a trip down to Emporia to talk to Rebekah Curry, public services provider at ESU's Library and Archives, about what kind of things people can expect. 

"We have a lot of informational panels highlighting the different topics we're discussing, like for instance, Emporia is the founding city of Veterans Day or Emporia State having the first library school west of the Mississippi," Curry said. "We've also got some artifacts connecting to some of that information that comes from our collections." 

Meriden-Ozawkie Public Library celebrates revamped location

The opening reception starts at 5 p.m. and goes until 7 p.m. on April 21. If you are unable to stop by, the exhibit will be open to the public until the end of 2026.

Johnathan Duncan, who represents the 6^th District in the Kansas City City Council, tells FOX4's Jonathan Ketz the stadium site is switching to a different location in downtown.

Ketz has learned the site may be in more of the Crown Center area, south of Pershing Road.

For weeks, city leaders have publicly indicated the stadium at the heart of a $1.9 billion development would be in Washington Square Park, north of Pershing.

"The location that will be briefed tomorrow is not Washington Square Park," Duncan said in an interview with FOX4 Tuesday.

Duncan was telling FOX4 what we first started to hear about Thursday. The Royals are apparently not as interested in putting their stadium east of Union Station.

"There's a lack of clarity outside," Duncan said. "I think you're going to find out tomorrow how just extensive that lack of clarity is. I have been briefed very high level, but I hear there are plans that are quite different than what was projected just two weeks ago."

The Royals wouldn't comment on the information Duncan gave us, but he added that even if the city does allocate funding for a Royals ballpark, this is still far from over.

"I think we're going to find out tomorrow that this is a target that continues to move, not because the city isn't determined, but because we have partners who don't quite know what they're doing," he continued.

Thursday, Duncan helped pass an ordinance that directs City Manager Mario Vasquez to negotiate a development agreement. It did not allocate $600 million in funding from the city to go to pay for the ballpark.

The Royals, Mayor Quinton Lucas and Gov. Mike Kehoe have scheduled a Wednesday morning announcement to discuss the team's selection of a stadium location.

Duncan told FOX4 he will be in attendance at Wednesday's announcement.

Just last week, Mayor Lucas and the city council approved a plan for up to $600 million in city-backed funding for stadium construction.

The state has also said it will contribute to construction costs. Missouri House Speaker Jonathan Patterson told FOX4 on Monday the state's portion of the funding could reach up to $900 million.

Mayor Lucas has said he hopes the new stadium would be ready for opening day 2030, and that the Royals would lease the facility for at least 30 years.

The Royals' current lease for Kauffman Stadium is set to expire in 2031.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that cases of rotavirus, a life-threatening and highly contagious virus, are surging across the country. We checked in with local doctors, who said they're starting to see it here in northeast Kansas.

Rotavirus is a stomach virus that typically impacts very young children who are under five years old. Symptoms include vomiting, fever and diarrhea. The CDC said symptoms usually start two days after exposure and can last up to eight days.

Local health experts said the best prevention is to wash your hands frequently.

"Ways to keep it from spreading are really washing your hands and washing surfaces," said pediatric nurse practitioner Taylor Smith. "We see big outbreaks in childcare settings, schools, that kind of thing, because kids aren't always the best at washing their hands, unfortunately, and then obviously dirty diapers cause that as well."

The CDC recommends that infants get vaccinated for rotavirus. Vaccinated children are less likely to get sick from rotavirus, while children who are not vaccinated usually have more severe symptoms.

Dusty Nichols with the Shawnee County Department of Emergency Management told 27 News that workers are set to make repairs to two local tornado sirens in the Oakland area in the coming days. He said the neighborhood's two sirens, located at the Philip Billard Airport and the new Oakland pool, are currently not functioning.

Emergency management is waiting for special equipment, a bucket truck, to make repairs at the airport siren. Nichols said the pool siren is relatively new, but it suffered damage during the pool's installation and its backup power supply is now empty.

"Those two sirens generate enough sound to cover that entire area," Nichols said.

Nichols said routine maintenance is often required to keep the sirens around the county operational and ready for severe weather events. He said testing of the sirens occurs at noon on Mondays during clear weather, with emergency management also able to run silent polls to see which ones are functioning.

The Shawnee County Department of Emergency Management will try to keep the sirens as maintained as possible. However, damage still occurs to these devices often in the form of exposure to the natural elements like wind and lightning strikes or by vandalism.

"We've found bullet holes in the boxes," Nichols said.

Nichols encourages people to have alternate ways to listen for severe weather alerts and tornado warnings. He said people can get National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather radios or download phone apps to keep up to date on the latest weather information.

The Shawnee County Department of Emergency Management is scheduled to make repairs to the Oakland pool siren on Wednesday, April 22. Workers are also set to make repairs to the airport siren on Monday, April 27.

The Kansas Department of Transportation reported a crash via KanDrive.org in the westbound lanes of Highway 24 where it crosses over the Big Blue River in east Manhattan. The crash was initially reported just after 4 p.m. on April 21.

KDOT reports Highway 24 west is back open as of 4:50 p.m. on April 21.

Court records show Dustin J. Kelley, 44, of Topeka, pleaded guilty to reduced charges on April 16, just days before his trial was set to begin. Police initially arrested him in January 2023, accusing him in the death of Jackson Tilton. Tilton's death marked the first homicide case of 2023, Topeka's deadliest year on record.

Kelley pleaded guilty to amended charges of involuntary manslaughter and aggravated endangering a child. The court accepted his plea and scheduled him for another court appearance on April 23 in preparation of his sentencing.

Topeka police began an investigation into possible child abuse on Jan. 4, 2023, after an infant, identified as Tilton, arrived at a local hospital in need of medical treatment after he was found unresponsive in his crib. Prosecutors said Kelley testified he found the infant unresponsive in his crib.

Tilton later died on Jan. 8, 2023. Prosecutors said Kelley's story was inconsistent with Tilton's injuries.

Police arrested Kelley in connection to the child's death on Jan. 12, 2023. Prosecutors later charged Kelley on Jan. 19, 2023 for the child's death with the following:

• Murder in the first degree
• Abuse of a child; shaking a child
• Aggravated endangering of a child

Man sentenced to 22 years in prison for deadly Topeka shooting

Kelley initially pleaded not guilty to the above charges on Sept. 12, 2023, according to court records. However, prior to a jury trial scheduled for April 2026, Kelley changed his plea to guilty on the amended charges.

The school announced on Tuesday that head soccer coach Nate Lie has agreed to a five-year extension, remaining in Lawrence through 2030.

"I am very grateful for the opportunity to represent this University and athletic department," Lie said. "I believe wholeheartedly in the leadership of Chancellor Girod and Travis Goff, and I so appreciate their support of the program and trust in our vision," Lie said in a press release. "I would like to personally thank Jason Booker for his daily commitment and mentorship, and our incredible coaching staff for their selflessness, expertise and unmatched work ethic."

In two seasons, Lie has guided the Jayhawks to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, while also capturing a Big 12 Tournament title in 2024.

In 2025, Kansas advanced to the Sweet 16 for the third time in program history. The Jayhawks finished the year with a 16-6-3 record and was ranked No. 13 in the final United Soccer Coaches Poll.

Kansas had a fantastic year where the team also set new single-season records in goals (51), corner kicks (172), and points (154).

"It's hard to imagine a tenure starting stronger than Nate's has here at Kansas," Kansas Director of Athletics Goff said. "He has won a championship and elevated Kansas Soccer to the highest levels in a short time. Moreover, he and his staff have represented KU in a world-class fashion, while developing our young women both on and off the pitch. Kansas Soccer is in great hands, and we couldn't be more excited to have Nate, his wife Emily, and their three wonderful children in Lawrence for years to come."
