The Lyon County Sheriff's Office announced in a social media post around 7:50 p.m. on May 12 that its deputies collected nine puppies near the intersection of Road K and Road 155 just south of Emporia. The sheriff's office said five puppies are black while another four are reddish-brown in coloration.

"Information from residents in the area suggest that these puppies were dumped and abandoned by their owner. If you have any information of these puppies or are interested in adopting, please get in touch with the Sheriff’s Office."

A cold front made its way across the area yesterday evening. This will start a brief "cool-down" today with temperatures falling back into the lower 80s for highs. The wind will be out of the north at 5-10 mph.

Beyond then, each day will be a bit warmer than the last as we head through the second half of next week. We’ll settle under a ridge of high pressure, allowing temperatures to warm into the lower 90s by the weekend.

As we approach the weekend, a few scattered storms will be possible. While not looking like a set-up for widespread severe storms, any storm in May needs to be watched closely. A more widespread rain chance looks to move in by Sunday and Monday.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on May 12 that Pharmacal is recalling a single lot of "MG217 Multi-symptom Treatment Cream & Skin Protectant Eczema Cream." The company is recalling this product as it is contaminated with staphylococcus aureus.

The FDA reports this type of bacteria can result in a range of infections that could even lead to life-threatening situations for some people. Individuals who have weakened immune systems, skin injuries or skin disorders, are at an increased risk of infections.

Staphylococcus aureus is a type of germ present in around 30% of people's noses and usually cause no issues, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). However, this bacteria can lead to staph infections and more serious infections in the bloodstream, endocarditis and pneumonia.

Pharmacal reports that it has yet to receive any reports of adverse events in connection to the recalled skin care product. The products were distributed nationwide through wholesale and retail stores like H.E. Butt Grocery Company and internet distributors like Amazon.

No. 11 Washburn men's tennis swept No. 41 Ouachita Baptist 4-0 on Tuesday to win the Central Region Championship and book their ticket to the NCAA Championships in Surprise, Arizona.

It marks the fourth straight season Washburn has advanced to the NCAA Championships.

The Ichabods got the day started taking the doubles point. The duo of Benjamin Fock and Zino Nahirniak lost 6-4 while Yuto Miyagawa and Kilian Martinez won 6-2 resulting in a close finish.

Tommy Cecchetti and Pavlos Parson would battle from behind winning the final three games to take a 7-5 win and give the Ichabods the doubles point.

In singles play, Fock, Cecchetti and Miyagawa won 6-4 to complete the 4-0 sweep.

The Ichabods will begin play in the Round of 16 beginning on May 20 in Surprise.

Washburn awaits its seeding and opponent.

Lake Perry is already in full summer mode with the warm weather. But this Saturday, May 16 will feature an official summer kick-off and welcome back event. 

Sewage spill advisory lifted at Lake Shawnee

"It's kind of a welcome back event that we're doing to the start of the season," said Preston Alexander, Lake Perry boat sales manager. "We're opening it to the general public and to the private slip holders that we have here. We'll have bounce houses available and open for the kids. We'll have free food from Captain's Grill here. That is at our premises as well. And we'll just have boats on the water ready to take out and run around and get the full feel and the effect of what you can expect out of our boat for this. "

Many boat dealers are expected to demo all sorts of different kinds of boats, including Sea-Doo and party boats, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at The Marina. With the lake offering so much, the employees said they are excited to get the season officially going. But one concern some have had before opening for the season is the lake levels. 

"Water levels were a concern at the start of the season," said Bryan Best, the general manager of Lake Perry Marina. "Every year, the Corps of Engineers draws down the lake three or four feet for navigational purposes and just a general planned winter drawdown. And if we don't get the early, late fall, early spring rains, it puts us in a little bit of a predicament. So the lake was down about three feet. Now with all the beautiful Kansas thunderstorms that have come through and the torrential rains brought us back up. And we're actually about two feet above two and a half, three feet above. So, we're sitting at a great water level right now, and we're excited for the holiday weekend."

Boats aren't the only thing to look forward to this summer and holiday weekend. Captain's Grill is preparing for its second year on the premises, with an opening date set for May 15.

The City of Topeka canceled an advisory for a cove at Lake Shawnee on May 11 after receiving guidance from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) on the situation, according to a city spokesman. The KDHE determined the advisory could be taken down based on the continued drop in E. coli levels following recent sampling efforts and on-site reviews.

City officials put the advisory in place on April 27 after heavy rains caused a sanitary sewage overflow from a nearby manhole cover. The city's advisory impacted a cove on the east side of the Lake just south of Shelter House #4.

The City of Topeka warned locals to avoid contact with water in the cove area out of an abundance of caution. The spill reportedly had no impact on nearby tap water users.

I-70 to shut down Wednesday in Topeka for California Avenue bridge demolition project

City officials and the KDHE also issued a separate advisory for the lake's Adventure Cove area on Jan. 29 this year after a pressurized sewer pipe ruptured near the water. Health officials lifted the health alert for this spill on Feb. 3.

Amanda Monhollon with Shawnee County shared in a press release that the Shawnee County Health Department (SCHD) is reporting some people may have been exposed to measles between 10:15 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, at Topeka Baptist Church at 3301 SW Gage Blvd. People who were at the church during this event should monitor themselves for possible symptoms until at least May 24.

The SCHD said that people who were at this location at the above time are susceptible to measles infection. These individuals should avoid working in an adult care home, correctional facility, healthcare facility, childcare facility or adult day care until at least May 24. People who were exposed to measles at the church should avoid contact with infants, pregnant people and those who are unvaccinated.

"We are working closely with KDHE and our local healthcare providers to monitor for a potential spread,” said Dr. Erin Locke, health officer for Shawnee County. “There are no known cases in Shawnee County at this time. Please ensure you and your loved ones have received your measles vaccines, as this is the safest and most effective way to protect our community.”

The Topeka Baptist Church posted a message to its Facebook page on May 12 regarding this situation.

"Dear Topeka Baptist Church Family,

We want to make you aware that we were informed a person who attended the second service at Topeka Baptist Church on Sunday, May 3rd has since been diagnosed with measles. Local health officials have been notified and are handling the situation according to established public health guidelines.

At this time, we want to encourage our church family not to panic, but simply to stay informed and use wisdom. Measles is highly contagious, but for most individuals who have been properly vaccinated or previously exposed, the risk is significantly reduced.

If you or a family member attended services during the affected timeframe and begin experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, or rash, we encourage you to contact your healthcare provider.

We are continuing to work closely with local health officials and will communicate any important updates as needed. Our desire is to care well for our church family while also being responsible and transparent with our community."

The Osage County Health Department and Kansas Department of Health and Environment confirmed on May 12 an active case of measles in Osage County. Healthcare officials have yet to confirm if this active case is tied to the recent exposure event in Shawnee County.

What is measles?

Health officials report measles is highly infectious and people who have potentially been exposed to it should self-isolate from others except when they meet with a healthcare provider. Early symptoms of a positive measles case include the following:

• Fever
• Runny nose
• Cough
• Red, watery eyes

Measles patients usually develop a red rash on the face one to four days after early symptoms appear, with the rash spreading to the rest of the body in the following days, according to the county health department. Measles symptoms usually develop 10 to 14 days after exposure.

Kansas State announced Jim Colbert, the namesake of Colbert Hills Golf Course, passed away on Sunday, May 10.

“We are saddened to learn of the passing of Jim Colbert,” Athletics Director Gene Taylor said in a press release. “Not only did he make a lasting impact on the golf community—both as a player and as the architect of our own Colbert Hills—but his passion for all things K-State was admirable. I enjoyed getting to know him and seeing firsthand his love for K-State. He will be missed.”

Colbert was a 1991 inductee into the K-State Athletics Hall of Fame.

During his time at K-State, Colbert was a three-year letterwinner and was a runner-up for the 1964 NCAA Championship.

“The loss of Jim Colbert will impact many people and projects throughout the country,” former head football coach Bill Snyder said in a press release. “Jim had a positive influence on many, many lives. He never failed to step up to help when he was in a position to help his community and people in need. He and his wonderful wife, Marsha, are special friends to so many. Their development of Colbert Hills has meant the world to Manhattan and the state of Kansas, and their genuine friendship has meant the world to Sharon and me and our family. There is not enough room in the newspaper to share all that they have meant to us, this community, and to the world of golf.”

Colbert turned pro in 1965 and joined the PGA Tour in 1966. His career ended in 1987, after playing in 44 majors.

Prior to an outstanding golf career, he arrived in Manhattan to play football until injuries derailed his career.

K-State has noted that a plan for a celebration of life is still being finalized and will be announced at a later date.
