TOPEKA (KSNT) – Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has issued a verbal state of disaster declaration Tuesday, due to recent rainfall that is causing widespread flooding across the state.
Kelly issued the declaration shortly after 2 p.m. on June 3, saying heavy rainfall is causing flooding and flash flooding across much of Kansas. Her proclamation will help mobilize resources to provide people with help at this time.
“Flood waters can be deceptive; and it only takes 18 inches of water to float a car,” Kelly said. “If you are traveling in areas with heavy rainfall, I encourage you to remember one simple phrase if there is water on the roadway: ‘Turn around, don’t drown.”
The Kansas Division of Emergency Management (KDEM) is partially activating the State Emergency Operations Center in Topeka to monitor flooding, assist counties with any needs they might have at this time and coordinate state resources. Kelly encourages people to check road conditions before leaving their homes by using KanDrive.
