TOPEKA (KSNT) – Firework stands will be opening a little earlier than usual in some places thanks to a new state law ahead of Independence Day.
The Shawnee County Commission approved the 2025 list of fireworks vendors during a meeting on June 2. In total, 23 firework stands are listed along with their locations around Topeka.
Firework vendors can sell their wares earlier this year thanks to a new Kansas law passed by the State Legislature. Lawmakers approved Senate Bill 199 in the spring, which allows for the year-round sale of fireworks in the state by permanent retailers and extended sales periods for seasonal retailers. However, local ordinances still regulate when fireworks can be set off and sold. In Topeka, for example, an ordinance states that fireworks can only be set off in certain hours on July 3-4.

Vendors in Shawnee County will be able to sell fireworks from Friday, June 20 through to Monday, July 7, due to the new fireworks law. The selling period opened on June 27 and ended on July 5 last year. Stands can stay open from 8 a.m. to midnight in Shawnee County, according to the county’s website.
