TOPEKA (KSNT) – Heartland BMX will be holding an annual fundraiser, bike show and race to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society later this month.
Heartland BMX will hold its Race For Life fundraiser in partnership with the USA BMX organization on July 12. The fundraiser event was started in 1981 when 12-year-old BMX racer Todd Kingsbury was diagnosed with Leukemia. When his friends found out, they started the annual event.
The first year, USA BMX raised $223,000 at 130 USA BMX tracks across the country, according to a press release from Heartland BMX. Kingsbury died two months after the fundraiser.
