TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Topeka Zoo reports that its family is getting bigger this week as it welcomes in two black bear cubs.
Brea Schmidt with the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center said in a press release that two orphaned black bear cubs are now in the Capital City. One is a seven-month-old male named Taz who comes from Wisconsin while the other is an 18-month-old female named Kiona who comes from Montana.
“This little guy is all paws and personality,” said Topeka Zoo Animal Curator Shanna Simpson when talking about Taz.

Zoo staff are now monitoring the two cubs prior to putting them into the larger bear yard area. Schmidt said people are encouraged to stay tuned for updates on the two cubs on social media in the days ahead.
“Each year, orphaned cubs need places like ours,” said Topeka Zoo Animal Care Director Wrylie Guffey. “We’re proud to give these two a forever home and can’t wait to watch them grow.”
