TOPEKA (KSNT) – Topeka’s city manager is speaking out Wednesday following the sudden departure of City Attorney Amanda Stanley.
27 News got in touch with Topeka City Manager Robert Perez on Aug. 6 regarding Stanley’s recent resignation from her position as city attorney. Perez said that while he wasn’t working for the City of Topeka when Stanley was initially hired, he said Topeka was fortunate to recruit her from the League of Kansas Municipalities.
“During Amanda’s time as City Attorney, sometimes even despite public pressure, she has ethically defended, guided, and advised Topeka’s Mayor, Governing Body, and City of Topeka employees on a myriad of legal issues,” Perez said. “Aside from providing legal leadership, Amanda has become very well-versed in economic development and incentives, provided invaluable insights into the City’s legislative agendas, which through those agendas, if you asked her, she would tell you she learned more about municipal banking than she ever thought she would, and she has built a high-performing team within the City Attorneys’ Office.”

The City of Topeka hired Stanley in August 2021. She graduated from Newman University with a Bachelor of Science in biology in 2008 and later graduated from the University of Kansas School of Law in 2014.
“Two truths about Amanda are that she has been an exceptional City Attorney and that Topeka City Hall will be left with a huge void to fill with her departure,” Perez said.
The city attorney is appointed by the city manager to manage the legal affairs of Topeka, according to the city’s website. The city’s legal department, under direction of the city attorney, is responsible for prosecuting municipal ordinance violations, providing legal advice and preparing legal documents for the city.

Stanley said she accepted an opportunity to serve in another community outside of Topeka in a statement provided to 27 News. She said she is looking forward to entering a new chapter “with energy and optimism.”
“Serving Topeka has been one of the greatest honors of my career,” Stanley said. “I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished. I’ll always be grateful for the chance to work alongside such dedicated and passionate public servants. I remain committed to supporting a smooth and successful transition for the organization and my team.
“Public service is a calling,” Stanley continued. “I leave with pride in what we’ve achieved together and with sincere wishes for the City’s continued success.”
