TOPEKA (KSNT) – Some Kansas Gas Service (KGS) customers are receiving surprising bills that are larger than what they were expecting this year.
Topeka resident Tim DeCoursey, Jr. told 27 News he recently got the unexpected surprise of a higher-than-usual gas bill in the mail this month. He was shocked to find a bill from the KGS stating he owed $460.
“There’s no explanation included in this bill at all,” DeCoursey said.
DeCoursey said he has used the KGS since 2009 and has his payments taken care of automatically. He said the three-page statement was labeled “corrected final bill” and contained combined charges going from Jan. 16 to July 15 this year.

“That would really be a kicker to get this bill for most households,” DeCoursey said.
DeCoursey, confused about the large statement, said he felt frustrated at getting such a distressingly large bill in the mail. He also said he felt “dismay and disappointment” over a lack of explanation for why it was so high.
“The thing that just kind of kills me most is there is no explanation on the paperwork,” DeCoursey said.
27 News got in touch with the KGS to find out what caused DeCoursey’s gas bill to be so high and to check to see if he is alone in facing this problem. Dawn Tripp, manager of Public Relations with the KGS, said a “system issue” is to blame.

“At Kansas Gas Service, we value our customers and understand how important it is to receive accurate and timely billing,” Tripp said. “We sincerely apologize to anyone who may have experienced a delay or confusion with a recent bill.”
Tripp explained that a small number of KGS customers are getting bills in the mail for previously unbilled charges for natural gas used earlier in 2025. KGS’ quality control process sometimes involves manual account adjustments or even on-site visits that can result in delays for some customers. Tripp said no late fees are being issued for these delayed charges.
“We recognize that many families and individuals are facing financial challenges right now,” Tripp said. “We want our customers to know that we’re here to help. Flexible payment options are available, and our Customer Service team is ready to assist from Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., at 800-794-4780, or through the Contact Us form.”
