TOPEKA (KSNT) – Topeka’s governing body voted Tuesday to reject a request to rezone a west Topeka property to allow the construction of a new gas station and convenience store.
Maverik had considered building a truck stop at 605 Southwest Fairlawn Road at the site of the old Holidome Ramada West Hotel. It requested the city rezone the property to allow for the construction of a 5,900-square-foot convenience store with 10 fueling stations for passenger vehicles, five for semi trucks and a truck scale.
In May, Topeka’s planning commission voted to approve its proposal. But in July, Topeka’s city council voted to send the issue back to the planning commission following an outpouring of concern from the public about traffic safety. The planning commission again approved request to rezone the property to allow for the construction of convenience store and gas station, but not for a truck stop.
Topeka’s governing board took up the issue for a final time on Tuesday. It voted 9-1 to reject the proposal entirely, with Councilman David Banks voting against.
