TOPEKA (KSNT) – 27 News checked in with the Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) to see how many of the new blackout license plates have been sold so far this year.
Blackout-style license plates went up for sale on July 1, 2025. KDOR reports that Kansas has sold more than 5,350 blackout license plates so far, making it the second most popular plate by sales since its introduction. KDOR says the most popular license plate has been the Flint Hills personalized plates.
As of Aug. 13, Kansas has sold:
- Personalized blackout – 2,270.
- Standard blackout – 1,693.
- Personalized blackout for motorcycles – 146.
- Standard blackout for motorcycles – 111.

The new plates have an all-black background with sharp white lettering, which makes them stand out. Kansas lawmakers approved the new plates earlier this year, with Governor Laura Kelly giving them the green light near the end of the 2025 session of the state legislature.
