TOPEKA (KSNT) – Shawnee County commissioners approved the construction of two cabins at Lake Shawnee on Monday.
Shawnee County commissioners heard from a spokeswoman with Parks and Recreation about a 50-50 grant awarded by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) for the construction of cabins at Lake Shawnee on Aug. 25.
The cabins will be 800 square feet each and feature amenities like a bathroom and small kitchen, according to Shawnee County Parks and Recreation. The project will cost $297,979, with the KDWP contributing half of the funds. The county will fund its half using the Campground Revolving Fund, which is user-fee funded.

In other business, the county approved a $1,820,642 bid from Bettis Asphalt & Construction Inc. for a multi-culvert replacement project on Southeast Berryton Road. The work is expected to start early next year and be finished before students go back to school in 2026.
Shawnee County Commissioners also approved:
- A consent agenda item to dispose of surplus playground equipment from the Gage Park Playland through Purple Wave, with the proceeds being added to the Parks and Recreation Building Maintenance Fund.
- The project budget for two bridge replacements on Northwest Valencia Road over the Silver Lake Drainage Ditch.
- A contract with SBB Engineering LLC to provide professional construction engineering services for a developer-funded earthwork and storm sewer project in the Timber Ridge Subdivision.
- A change order for a pavement replacement project for Southeast Croco Road near Southeast 21st Street for a $2,699 adjustment.
