SHAWNEE COUNTY (KSNT) – The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office reports that two people are dead following a shooting in a neighborhood south of Topeka on Wednesday.
The sheriff’s office reports that deputies were called shortly before 10 a.m. on Aug. 27 to a home in the Montara neighborhood for a welfare check. Deputies arriving at the scene found two people dead from gunshot wounds. Preliminary information suggests this was a domestic situation.
“At this time, investigators believe all parties involved have been identified, and there is no ongoing threat to the community.
The Sheriff’s Office appreciates the assistance of the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Shawnee Heights Fire Department in today’s incident.”

Several schools in the Auburn-Washburn USD 437 School District entered ‘secure campus’ conditions the morning of Wednesday, Aug. 27 in response to a large law enforcement presence in the 6700 block of Briarmeade Lane in the Montara neighborhood. The secure campus conditions were lifted at all USD 437 schools by 1:45 p.m. on Aug. 27.
Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office deputies and other law enforcement personnel arrived in the Montara neighborhood a little before 10 a.m. on Aug. 27. The scene was officially cleared by 1:15 p.m. on the same day.
