TOPEKA (KSNT) – Now that summer is in the rearview mirror, people aren’t using their pools as much. But just because you’re not taking a dip doesn’t mean you should forget about it.
“You need to keep the pool in balance, take care of the pumps and the filters, keep the debris out of it, get it balanced, clean your filter really good just before you close, and get prepped,” Swims and Sweeps owner Clay Sherwood said. “Because eventually, when you close the pool, you want the pool in the best shape possible.”

Now that your pool is closed, you may no longer be thinking about staying cool; rather, you’ll be thinking about staying warm. While a fireplace is a good way to do that, it’s important to make sure it’s clean and ready to go before turning it on.
“If you have a plug, you’re going to smoke up your whole house; if the bugs have built up like on a gas fireplace, they’ve built up nests; your fireplace may not work at all, Sherwood said. “There’s always inherent dangers. But it’s more that yearly maintenance to make sure your fireplace is always safe.”
Stepping back outside, your yard should do fine in the fall, but there’s plenty of work to be done ahead of winter. To avoid a thinner lawn, now is the best time to put down grass seed and fertilizer.

“If you needed to overseed or start fresh, now is optimum time,” Jackson’s Greenhouse Garden Center Manager Patrick Herr said. “You can do it all the way up until we like to say October 10th is a cutoff just to make sure it has enough time to come up and get established before winter.”
While we’re not there yet, Herr tells 27 News, once we reach late October, winterizer will be important to help get that richer, greener color in your grass.
