HIAWATHA (KSNT) – The Brown County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) is warning residents of suspicious activity happening around farmers’ fields.
The sheriff’s office has received several reports from locals of suspicious vehicles “lurking around their fields recently.” Brown County Sheriff John Merchant said there was a dark-colored SUV, a Maroon pickup truck and a light colored car with Missouri plates that had been spotted while harvest was taking place. The sheriff said the vehicles quickly left after farmers noticed them.
“We are alerting farmers so they can take extra precautions when changing fields or leaving vehicles or equipment unattended or with keys left in the ignition.
So far, no theft reports have been reported, only suspicious activity. Unfortunately, this time of year we have unscrupulous individuals who are always looking for an opportunity to steal from others instead of working an honest job.”
The BCSO wrote in an email alert.

The sheriff said most of the suspicious activity is being reported in the northern part of Brown County. If you notice anything suspicious, call the sheriff’s office at 785-742-7125 or 911 if it’s an emergency.
