TOPEKA (KSNT) – Stormont Vail Health recently earned a Level II Trauma Center designation by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE).
Level III Trauma Center status means that hospitals able to provide the assessment, resuscitation, surgery, intensive care and stabilization of injured patients and emergency operations, but not definitive care for everyone, according to the American Trauma Society. This Level II distinction means that Stormont Vail Health will be able to provide:
- 24-hour immediate coverage by general surgeons, as well as coverage by the specialties of orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, anesthesiology, emergency medicine, radiology and critical care.
- Tertiary care needs such as cardiac surgery, hemodialysis and microvascular surgery may be referred to a Level I Trauma Center.
- Provides trauma prevention and continuing education programs for staff.
- Incorporates a comprehensive quality assessment program.

“Receiving designation from KDHE is a meaningful affirmation of the work our trauma team does every day,” said Tamine Gogel, APRN-C and Director of Trauma Services at Stormont Vail, in a press release. “Combined with our ACS reverification earlier this year, it shows that our program meets both national and state standards for excellence. But more importantly, it reflects our commitment to being there for patients when they need us most. We’re proud to serve as a trusted resource for our community and the region.”
Over the past five years, the Stormont Vail Trauma Program has significantly grown, adding a thousand more patients a year. They deal with injuries such as motor vehicle collisions, falls, penetrating trauma and surgical emergencies.
The KDHE designation reflects their program’s continued dedication to met rigorous state standards for trauma care. Their Level II designation remains valid through April 14, 2028.
