RILEY COUNTY (KSNT) – An Overland Park man is dead and another person is hospitalized following a crash south of Manhattan on Tuesday.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reports the crash occurred shortly before 11:10 a.m. on Dec. 2 at mile-marker 101 on northbound Pillsbury Drive/KS-177 Highway or close by the Konza Prairie lookout point. A 2005 Ford Super Duty and 2012 Hyundai Accent were both traveling north in the right lane on KS-177 at the time of the crash.
The KHP reports the Ford, traveling in the same lane behind the Hyundai, rear-ended the Hyundai. The Ford came to a stop on the west shoulder while the Hyundai stopped in the east ditch.
The driver of the Hyundai, James E. Echols, 54, of Overland Park, died in the crash. A passenger in the Hyundai, a 52-year-old Las Vegas woman, was hospitalized with serious injuries. The 17-year-old Manhattan local driving the Ford was uninjured.
