TOPEKA (KSNT) – Sunday, one local organization held one of Topeka’s most impactful holiday events, demonstrating a powerful example of our community coming together for children who need it most, especially during the holiday season.
The 20/30 Club of Topeka held its fifth annual “Christmas for Kids” event at the SW Topeka Walmart. Through the organization’s fundraising efforts, beneficiaries and Walmart’s generous sponsorship, they can support four core children’s organizations in Topeka: the KVC Kansas, CASA, Boys & Girls Club, and Family Service & Guidance Center.
This event gives local kids in need a chance to experience the joy of Christmas by taking charge during a budgeted shopping spree at Walmart, checking items off their wish list one at a time.

“It’s so exciting to see these kids tear through the aisles, not only shopping for themselves, but more importantly, shopping for their families,” Ryan Irsik, Walmart director of public affairs and government relations, said. ”You know, they’ll come in and say, my mom needs a new coat. My grandmother needs something from our health and wellness division. And so that’s what makes it really special that they’re not thinking of themselves. But like you were thinking about their family. “
“It’s just a time that it makes you feel grateful for what you have,” Mayor Mike Padillia said. ”And being part of this effort helps you feel like you’re giving back to the community as well. The money that they raised throughout the year 20/30 club gave us Walmart’s generous hosting and collaboration, making it possible for a lot of kids to get some things they probably couldn’t get.”

The children in attendance today not only got to shop around with their dedicated person from 20/30, but a few guests also made an appearance, including Mayor Elect Spencer Duncan, the Coca-Cola polar bear, and the man of the season, Santa!
This event is able to support over 200 kids every year who will get to experience the joy of Christmas and the holidays.
