EMPORIA (KSNT) – No. 1 Washburn executes the season sweep over Emporia State.
The Ichabods defeat the Hornets 75-64.
The Hornets would trail by double-digits until the final few minutes, when they made it a two-possession game. Despite the close lead in the final minute, the ‘Bods never trailed in the 40 minutes of play.
“This league is good, and it’s hard to win,” Washburn head coach Brett Ballard said. “Come over to your rival and win by double-digits in a game that I don’t know if we played our best, that’s because of Emporia.”
“We’ve got to keep doing the things we’ve got to do to get better,” Emporia State head coach Tom Billeter said. “We’ve got to start doing things to win games, too. You win those games with stops, and we just didn’t quite get the stops.”
The Ichabods were led by Dillon Claussen with 17 points, followed by Bryson Smith with 12. For the Hornets, the squad was led by Andrew Pengel who had 15, while Trey Redd and Chris Harris had 12 each.
Washburn remains undefeated, and ESU falls to 5-11.
“I’m really proud of our team, I’m really proud of how they responded. This season is a grind, and they keep answering the bell,” Ballard said.
