TOPEKA (KSNT) – With a winter storm making its way toward the area, utility companies like Evergy are preparing their crews.
Even though Evergy doesn’t expect widespread power outages, the company is still making sure crews are ready for the cold. Workers are being briefed on winter safety precautions because repairing power lines in freezing temperatures can take more time.
Bulky winter gear can slow down restoration. Crews also check in on their teammates to make sure everyone is staying safe while working in below-freezing temperatures.
Snowfall now looks likely for the region by Friday night into Saturday
“Part of their morning safety briefing is going to be making sure that you’re working safely in those conditions. You know, a big part of it is making sure that they have the right gear. So, power restoration can take a little bit longer sometimes in the cold because you’ve got more gloves, you’ve got more gear on trying to stay warm,” Evergy Spokesperson, Gina Penzig, said. “So that’s one of the challenges of working in this type of weather.”
Evergy says they haven’t received requests from other cities for extra assistance, but crews are ready to be deployed if conditions worsen.
