TOPEKA (KSNT) – Local firefighters are sounding the alarm after someone allegedly stole a sign honoring a Topeka five-year-old homicide victim.
Topeka Fire Department Captain Michael Monhollon took to social media this week, asking for whoever took the sign from the memorial of Zoey Felix to return it. He said the sign has been missing since before the snow started to fall on Jan. 24, and many of the first responders are disheartened as this was a donation by one of their firefighters at Station 9.
“The response from the community has been overwhelming to me,” Monhollon said. “And we’ve had somebody already indicate that they would step up and remake it for no charge. But ultimately, it would be nice just to have the original one back in place as it was intended to be.”

The firefighters are not asking for anyone to get in trouble over the missing sign; they would like to see whoever took it to do the right thing and bring it back to where it belongs.
Felix was raped and killed in October 2023 by Mickel Cherry. Her death prompted reforms in the Kansas Department for Children and Families and sparked action in the Topeka community. Cherry was sentenced in July 2025 to consecutive life sentences without parole for 50 years for his role in Felix’s death.
