FORT RILEY (KSNT) – Services at a Kansas Army post are restored following a brief, partial government shutdown in late January.
Fort Riley Army Post announced via social media on Feb. 3 that many civilian staffers were placed in furlough status due to a government shutdown. However, the Army post updated its original announcement the following day, stating that it has resumed normal operations.
Services at Fort Riley handled by civilian staffers, such as answering phone calls and emails and managing social media channels, were impacted by the shutdown. Fort Riley spokesman Kirk Hutchinson said there are a little under 2,500 federal staffers employed at the Army post.
Employees at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita were also placed on furlough status due to the lapse in federal funding.
Fort Riley civilian staff were placed in furlough status due to a partial federal government shutdown that started on Jan. 31, 2026. The shutdown only lasted for a few days, coming nowhere close to the 43-day shutdown that came about in 2025. Many Fort Riley civilian staffers were also placed in furlough status last year during the 2025 shutdown.
