TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Kansas Historical Society is hosting an opening reception for an exhibit that aims to teach Kansas’ history.
The Kansas Historical Society is hosting an opening reception for “Declaration 1776: the Big Bang of Modern Democracy,” a traveling exhibition from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History on Feb. 13 at the State Archives lobby at 5:30 p.m. The exhibition, which started showing on Jan. 29, features a section called “Kansas 1776” that goes over the history of the land before Kansas became a state in 1861.
According to the Kansas Museum of History in a Facebook post, the exhibit uses primary sources to demonstrate how Americans and people across the world became inspired by the writing of the Declaration of Independence.
The traveling exhibition is touring through 46 different organizations across Kansas, including the Seneca Free Library, the Flint Hills Discovery Center in Manhattan and the Jefferson County Historical Society in Oskaloosa.
The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, a nonprofit and nonpartisan organization that focuses on teaching American history, is showcasing the Declaration 1776 tour with the Humanities Kansas organization until Dec 31.
The Kansas Museum of History also opened the exhibition, “Celebrating Kansas!” on Feb. 12. The museum collaborated with KANSAS! magazine to feature stories and photos from across the state. “Celebrating Kansas!” continues until May 17.
The public can visit the Humanities Kansas organization’s website to see the Declaration 1776 tour’s scheduled dates and locations. The Kansas Museum of History is located at 6425 SW 6th Avenue in Topeka.
