TOPEKA (KSNT) – Kansas transportation authorities report drivers should expect some changes soon on a Highway 24 project near Topeka.
Kate Craft with the Kansas Department of Transportation said in a press release that temporary adjustments will be made starting on Monday, Feb. 16 in the existing Highway 24 project area in Shawnee and Jefferson Counties.
Drivers on Highway 24 between Goldwater Road and Muddy Creek will be shifted to one lane in each direction in the new eastbound lanes. The K-4/Oakland Expressway ramps to and from westbound Highway 24 will be closed.
Craft said this configuration is expected to remain in place until early 2027. She said the westbound Highway 24 ramp to northbound K-4 will also be closed for five months.

The southbound K-4 ramp leading to westbound Highway 24 will stay open, but will temporarily provide access to the south K-4/Oakland Expressway ramp only, according to KDOT. Drivers trying to access westbound Highway 24 from southbound K-4 can follow a marked detour route on Northeast 46th Street and Topeka Boulevard or find an alternate route. These changes are expected to stay in place for 30 days while a crossover is built that will connect K-4 ramp traffic to westbound Highway 24.
Craft said that, once the crossover is built, the southbound K-4 ramp will connect traffic to westbound Highway 24 only. Access to the south K-4/Oakland Expressway ramp will be fully closed. Drivers can follow the detour on westbound Highway 24 to Topeka Boulevard, back onto eastbound Highway 24 and back to the southbound K-4/Oakland Expressway exit.
