TOPEKA (KSNT) – Large amounts of smoke in the air are being reported south of Topeka on Friday.
Many in Topeka may have noticed a lot of smoke in the air on Feb. 12 near the city’s south side and the Topeka Regional Airport. Eric Johnson, president of the Metropolitan Topeka Airport Authority, told 27 News the smoke is coming from a controlled burn.
“This is an annual event that helps us control noxious weeds and wildlife activity on airport property,” Johnson said. “We started the burn on the infield of the airport at approximately 8:30am. We quickly recognized the conditions were not ideal so we abandoned the effort in that location. Conditions were significantly better along the South end of the airport so our crews began working there. We expect the effort will be terminated this afternoon and monitored by our evening shift.”

Topeka’s air quality as reported from a federal government monitor at the Kansas Neurological Institute is rated as 75, according to airnow.gov. This rating indicates that unusually sensitive people should consider staying inside more and reduce outdoor activities.
