TOPEKA (KSNT) — The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is warning locals of scam calls that imitate law enforcement that falsely inform people they missed jury duty while making demands for financial compensation.
The sheriff’s office has reportedly received multiple reports of the scam call, according to a social media post on Feb. 19. The scammers claim to be with law enforcement and claim the person they’re calling has missed jury duty. The scammers will then request immediate payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency or wire transfers.
The sheriff’s office said it does not contact by phone in regards to payments and does not collect fines or fees by phone call.
People who receive scam calls like these are encouraged to hang up. The sheriff’s office also recommends contacting local law enforcement directly through the use of a verified phone number.
“Scammers rely on fear and urgency to prevent you from thinking clearly. If something feels suspicious, trust your instincts and verify the information before taking any action.”
