TOPEKA (KSNT) – Kansas transportation officials are releasing new information abut an upcoming total I-70 closure in Topeka that is slated to last for several months.
Kate Craft with the Kansas Department of Transportation said a new phase of the ongoing $239 million Polk-Quincy Viaduct project is set to start soon. During this phase, drivers will have to find new travel routes as workers construct new viaducts and their connections to the highway and local streets.
KDOT will be shutting I-70 down completely between Topeka Boulevard and Eighth Avenue starting in the early summer. This work is expected to wrap up in late fall 2026, lasting an estimated six months.
Craft also said the California Avenue bridge that crosses over I-70 will be closed in east Topeka for a construction project. This project will coincide with the PQV project and upcoming closure of I-70 when lower amounts of traffic are expected in the area.
