SILVER LAKE (KSNT) – A new name is in the Silver Lake boys basketball history books, and that name is Dayne Johnson.
The senior recorded his 1,637th career point to become the school’s all-time leading scorer, breaking legendary coach Lon Kruger’s record set back during his career from 1967-1970.
On Thursday night, during Silver Lake’s 3A Sub-State game against Maranatha Christian Academy, Johnson broke the record at the free-throw line.
Kruger played at Kansas State from 1970 to 1974 before he went on to have a remarkable coaching career.
“It’s awesome, I had my eyes on it a little bit, but I couldn’t have been here without my teammates, without my coaches,” Johnson said. “It’s just awesome how good this school is to officially be the leader.”
Johnson said he had his eyes on breaking the record about midway through this season.
“About halfway through, I thought I had a shot at it, but just happy to finally get it.”
“Probably at the end of last year, looking at it and what he would have to average,” Silver Lake boy’s basketball head coach Shannon Kruger said as he reflected on when he thought Johnson could achieve this. “I’m not surprised at all.”
Johnson recorded 24 points in the Eagles’ 65-25 win.
