LAWRENCE (KSNT) – University and police officials are weighing in after federal immigration agents reportedly conducted activities in Lawrence and at the University of Kansas on Friday.
The Lawrence Kansas Police Department issued a statement on social media on Feb. 27 regarding recent social media reports about the presence of agents affiliated with Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the city and at the University of Kansas. The LKPD said it hasn’t received any information from the Department of Homeland Security regarding possible operations in Lawrence.

“As a reminder, immigration law is not a function of the Lawrence Kansas Police Department. In addition, LKPD Policy requires public notification if officers are asked to assist in civil immigration enforcement.”

Erinn Barcomb-Peterson, a spokeswoman for the University of Kansas, told 27 News that KU is aware of reported ICE activity on campus Friday. She released the following statement on the situation:
“The University of Kansas is aware of reports that federal immigration officers may have been present in Lawrence campus parking areas today. KU Public Safety has been notified and is working to gather additional information. At this time, we do not have confirmed details about the nature of the activity or whether it involved any KU students or employees. We understand these reports are unsettling, and our priority is the well‑being of our campus community.”
ICE agents visited Lawrence recently on Feb. 17. This incident prompted concern among members of the Lawrence community.
