TOPEKA (KSNT) – A Topeka athlete is preparing to represent Kansas on the international stage.
Josh Alters has been selected to attend the first-ever Special Olympics North America Regional Athlete Congress. Alters joined the 27 News Morning Show on Wednesday to talk about this big opportunity and to tell us more about it.
The event will bring together 26 athlete leaders from across the United States, Canada and the Caribbean for leadership training, collaboration and skill-building.

The congress runs March 8–13 at Special Olympics Michigan headquarters in Grand Rapids. It focuses on personal development, professional growth and problem-solving for athletes with intellectual disabilities.
The Regional Athlete Congress is part of Special Olympics North America’s broader Athlete Leadership program, which helps athletes grow into leadership roles and advocate for inclusive communities.
Alters and his mentor were selected through an application process and leadership service. Organizers said the event will also help shape priorities for the 2027 Special Olympics Global Athlete Congress in Chile.
“Josh is the perfect person for this,” said John Lair, president and CEO of Special Olympics Kansas. “He’s a true leader in every sense of the word.”
