TOPEKA (KSNT) – High school theatre students from across Kansas visited the State Capitol for Kansas Thespians Advocacy Day on Wednesday, an event focused on promoting the importance of theatre education in schools.
The Kansas Thespians event on March 11 allowed over 200 students, educators and advocates to meet with lawmakers and share why arts programs matter in their schools and communities.
Weston Widman, the advocacy chair and a state thespians officer for Kansas said students attended the event to remind lawmakers that theatre programs deserve support.

“We’re kind of here basically saying, hey, theatre matters, we exist here and we would appreciate adequate funding for our theatre programs in public high school,”

Throughout the day, students met with members of the Kansas House and Senate to discuss the importance of continued funding and support for theatre and arts education in public schools.
