TOPEKA (KSNT) – U.S. military officials report that all crew members of a KC-135 that crashed in Iraq are confirmed dead.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on March 13 that all six crew members aboard a KC-135 Stratotanker that crashed in western Iraq on March 12 are confirmed dead. Officials report the aircraft went down over friendly airspace during “Operation Epic Fury.”
CENTCOM said the circumstances of the crash are under investigation. Officials report the aircraft did not go down due to hostile or friendly fire. CENTCOM will release the names of the crew members in 24 hours after next of kin notifications are completed.
KC-135 Stratotankers are large refueling planes that provide long-range refueling capabilities for the U.S. Air Force around the world. Each of these plans can carry gross weights of up to 322,500 pounds.

KC-135 planes operate out of several air bases around the nation, including two in Kansas. These are McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita and Forbes Field in Topeka.
