TOPEKA (KSNT) – Spring is just about here and, while it might not feel like it today, so are the warmer temperatures.
One Topeka group is looking ahead to help local families beat the upcoming heat. Strengthening & Equipping Neighborhoods Together (SENT) works with under-resourced communities here in Topeka. It is kicking off its annual initiative to keep more homes cool this summer.
The goal is to “Beat the Heat” by providing low-cost window air conditioning units to families who can’t afford them. SENT Inc. is working to raise $15,000 to purchase 100 brand-new air conditioning units.

Local families will be able to purchase these units for around $50 each. Organizers said that small fees will help ensure the program reaches more homes.
“A lot of our neighbors also like that we, instead of just giving them away for free, we sell them at a discount,” said Founder and Executive Director of SENT Inc. Johnathan Sublet. “So, the money that they give us toward that air conditioner actually goes toward paying for more air conditioners, for more people to get help. “
Experts say heat is the deadliest weather-related hazard in the United States. It disproportionately impacts low-income Families, medically fragile individuals and senior citizens living in under-resourced neighborhoods
If you would like to donate, Sublet said you can check out SENT’s website or send a check to their headquarters. You can visit the SENT Inc. website by clicking here.
