New advisory groups rolled out in Topeka
Aarion Gray, a spokesman for Topeka USD 501, shared a message with 27 News that the district sent out to staff and families on March 24 regarding the walkout.
“Some students participated in a walkout this afternoon. This is not a school-sanctioned or planned activity.
While we respect and support students’ rights to express their views, students are expected to remain in class during the instructional day. Any student who leaves class or is not present during scheduled class time will be marked absent or tardy in accordance with school attendance policies.
We appreciate your support in reinforcing the importance of attendance and learning while also encouraging respectful and appropriate expression of student voice.”

School officials told 27 News the protest was not a school-sanctioned activity and that participants would be marked absent or tardy in accordance with the school’s attendance policies.
