TOPEKA (KSNT) – State troopers say a teenager is seriously injured Wednesday after she attempted to serve around a deer on the road in Coffey County.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reported the crash happened at around 8:25 a.m. on March 25 at 12th Road and Dobbin Road near Burlington. A teen driving a 2011 GMC SUV was traveling eastbound on 12th Road on an approach to where it meets Dobbin Road before a deer cross the roadway — the vehicle veered off the road to avoid the deer before hitting a culvert.
The KHP said a deer started to cross the road, causing the teenager to veer off the road in an attempt to avoid hitting the animal. The teenage driver hit a culvert, suffering serious injuries.
First responders transported the 17-year-old Gridley resident to a Topeka hospital for treatment. She wore a seat belt during the crash.
