TOPEKA (KSNT) – A bounce-back series win for the Hornets.
Emporia State softball (21-12, 7-5 MIAA) snapped a four-game skid on Friday, sweeping Nebraska-Kearney (13-26, 2-8 MIAA) in a doubleheader.
The Hornets took game one 15-4 and game two 5-3.
Brooke Flewelling opened the scoring in the first with a solo home run. It marked her 12th home run of the season. The Holton alumna added her 14th later in the fourth inning with a two-run shot.
Avery Brewer also had three RBIs in the win. She had a two-run double in the third and a sac-fly in the sixth.
Juliana De Luna and Addyson Easter each had two RBIs in the win. De Luna had an inside-the-park home run in the 7th.
Sydney Wagner, Brynley Smith, and Ally Miller provided the other scores.
Hannah Butterbaugh got the win for the Hornets. Through 3.2 innings, she allowed six hits and three runs. She struck out two and walked one.
Chloe Wilson and Morgan Tomlinson pitched in relief. Wilson allowed three hits and a run in 2.1 innings. Tomlinson pitched an inning.
In Game 2, ESU opened the scoring with two runs in the opening frame,
Smith singled to bring in a score, and then Flewelling scored on a wild pitch.
The Lopers responded with two singles in the inning to plate three scores.
ESU would add to the scoring in the third as Brewer brought in a run from a triple to tie the game. Miller would then single in the inning to take the lead.
Flewelling added some breathing room in the 7th with an RBI triple to secure the win.
Maci Hayes got the win inside the circle for the Hornets. Through five innings, she allowed two hits while striking out three.
Izzy Sloan got the start. She allowed four hits and three runs across the opening two innings. Sloan recorded three errors while striking out two batters and walking four.
The Hornets are back in action Saturday for a doubleheader on the road against Fort Hays State. Game 1 set for 1:00.
