TOPEKA (KSNT) – A Topeka-area bank is holding a free document shredding event at a local shopping center this weekend.
Capitol Federal is partnering up with West Ridge Mall to hold the “Shred with CapFed” event from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 11. The event will be in the mall’s parking lot west of the Furniture Mall of Kansas entrance.

Volunteers and Capitol Federal employees will be on site to help people unload their materials to be shredded. People are asked to put their documents in paper or plastic grocery bags or two copy-paper-sized boxes in the trunk or cargo areas of their vehicles. Some other things people should know in advance include:
- What to bring
- A maximum of two paper or plastic grocery bags or two copy-paper-sized boxes. Capitol Federal reserves the right to refuse oversized items.
- Odd sizes or excess shred will be refused.
- Only paper is being accepted at this event.
- What to shred
- Bank statements, utility bills, credit card statements or other personal correspondence.
- Old tax returns (you can check the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) website for more information on what to keep and what to shred).
- Check carbons with your account number.
- Loan documents for vehicles you don’t own anymore.
- Documents with personal identifying information, such as name and date of birth or Social Security number.
- Records from closed 401k and other financial accounts.
