TOPEKA (KSNT) – A new roundabout in southwest Topeka near a local middle school is nearing completion this spring.
Curt Niehaus with Shawnee County Public Works told 27 News on April 9 that work is wrapping up on the new roundabout installation project at Southwest 29th Street and Southwest Auburn Road. Work initially got started on this big three-phase project in the summer of 2025.
Niehaus said the project may be completed as soon as the end of May this year, weather permitting. Shawnee County work crews are currently taking care of signing installation, pavement markings and other seeding and sodding labor, which consists of the last of the work for this project.
Is the Southwest Fairlawn Road project in Topeka almost done?
Shawnee County partially reopened this roundabout in November last year, stating that it would be completely finished by June 2026. The new roundabout is set to serve as the future access point to the nearby Washburn Rural North Middle School.
Niehaus said workers will conduct a “walk-through” of the project site and develop a “punch list” of things that need to be corrected as part of the final touches on this new roundabout. The contractor will then make any needed corrections before finally opening the road.
