EMPORIA (KSNT) – A Turnpike Tussle win for the Ichabods.
No. 13 Washburn men’s tennis won its eighth straight match with a convincing 6-1 victory over rivals Emporia State Hornets on Saturday, April 11.
Washburn (13-5, 4-0 MIAA) wasted little time taking control, securing the doubles point to set the tone early in the Turnpike Tussle.
The No. 50 duo of Tommy Cecchetti and Pavlos Parson opened with a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, before the tenth-ranked pair of Benjamin Fock and Zino Nahirniak rallied late to claim a 7-5 victory on the top court and lock up the opening point.
Emporia State (8-7, 2-1 MIAA) avoided the sweep in doubles with a tight 7-6 tiebreak win at No. 3.
In singles play, Washburn’s depth took over.
Yuto Miyagawa gave the Ichabods early momentum with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles. The Hornets responded with their lone point at No. 2, as Anton Sarunic got the Hornets on the board with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Kilian Martinez

Washburn’s Tommy Cecchetti rebounded from a tough opening set to win in three sets at No. 3, showcasing resilience after dropping the first set 6-1. That momentum carried over to the top court, where Pavlos Parson battled back from a first-set loss to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-4—clinching the match for the Ichabods.
Washburn added to the final margin with straight-set wins from Benjamin Fock at No. 5 and Moritz Pieper at No. 6, sealing the 6-1 victory.
With the win, Washburn extends its winning streak to eight matches and remains unbeaten in MIAA play.
Emporia State is back in the courts on Friday, April 17, set to take on Northwest Missouri State.
The Ichabods will return to action on Saturday, April 18, to also square off with Northwest Missouri State, with matches beginning at 10:30 a.m.
