TOPEKA (KSNT) - Families gathered at the Topeka Zoo Monday for Abilities Day, an annual event designed to create a more accessible and inclusive experience for visitors of all abilities.
The event is hosted in partnership with community organizations and the zoo, offering accommodations and adjustments so guests with sensory, physical or developmental needs can enjoy the zoo comfortably. Organizers said the goal is to make sure every visitor has the opportunity to experience the zoo in a way that works for them.
“So, that’s why I’m at Capper,” said Shawna Slack, senior director of development at Capper. “I love the mission of Capper, supporting people of all abilities. And I was just saying earlier that I’ve enjoyed walking around. It’s a lot of laughter, a lot of smiles. People are excited to be here. So, I’m happy that we can do that one day out of the year.”

Families explored exhibits, interacted with animals and participated in activities designed with accessibility in mind throughout the day. Staff said features such as reduced-sensory areas and thoughtful event planning help create a welcoming environment.
More than 1,600 people attended this year’s event, according to organizers, with visitors continuing to arrive throughout the day. Officials said Abilities Day continues to grow each year, with the hope of expanding inclusive experiences and ensuring the zoo remains accessible to all members of the community.
