TOPEKA (KSNT) – A new mural at the Topeka Zoo is bringing color and a conservation message to visitors.
A partnership between the zoo and the Rotary Club of Topeka helped bring this artwork to life, which focuses on the impact of single-use plastics on wildlife and the environment. Organizers said the mural is meant to raise awareness about how everyday actions can impact ecosystems across the country.
“So, the message behind this mural is to help people learn to stop using single-use plastics or at least reduce them,” said Cynthi McCarvel, chief advancement officer at the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center.
The mural also illustrates how plastic waste can travel through waterways, eventually impacting animals in rivers and other habitats.

Visitors have already responded positively, with many praising both the design and the meaning behind the piece. Zoo officials said the artwork not only enhances the space visually, but also serves as an educational tool.
Leaders said public art like this plays an important role in connecting the community to conservation efforts, while encouraging people to think more about how their choices affect wildlife.
