TOPEKA (KSNT) – From the sidelines to center stage, Washburn University’s dance team has some new hardware after representing Topeka at the national level.
The dancing blues traveled to Orlando, Florida, earlier this month, to the College Classic National Championship. Universities from all across the nation faced off in categories like jazz, hip-hop, and pom. This year, the team danced its way to the top, taking second place for their pom routine for division two, and in the top 20 across all divisions.

They also received third place in jazz and fifth in the hip hop category. Working for you, we spoke to head coach Grace Ellrich about the experience.
“It’s awesome. You know, there are schools from all over the country, but we are so proud to bring the dance team from the middle of the nation here to Orlando and show that we have talent, too,” Ellrich said. “I think that there’s a lot of the West Coast, East Coast schools that come in and they’re the powerhouses. But we hold it down for Kansas.”
The team paid for the entire trip through fundraising, which Ellrich says is a true testament of their hard work and dedication.
