TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) hosted its first-ever human trafficking seminar Thursday in downtown Topeka.
Staff with multiple state agencies learned a variety of skills during the seminar on April 23. These include identifying potential trafficking signals, how to report these situations and how to protect the vulnerable.
Traffickers use three tactics: force, fraud and coercion, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The DHS said traffickers are using social media more and more to recruit, exploit and advertise their victims.
“As state employees, we are out in the in the community everywhere, all the time,” said Kansas Secretary of Labor, Amber Shultz. “So I want them to be able to understand the indicators of human trafficking and hopefully be able to report it.”
If you or someone you know is in trouble, you can call the national human trafficking hotline at 1-888-373-7888.
