TOPEKA (KSNT) – Workers will begin the process of replacing a bridge over I-70 in Topeka next week.
Kate Craft with the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) announced in a press release that work is scheduled to start on Monday, April 27 on the California Avenue bridge over I-70 in Topeka. Crews will be fully replacing the bridge which will require the closure of I-70 for one weekend later this spring.
KDOT’s initial work on the bridge will have little impact on either pedestrian or I-70 traffic. Some nearby streets may be temporarily reduced or closed while workers build sidewalks for pedestrian detour paths.

Craft said the bridge will close in mid-May and remain closed until the project is completed in the late fall of 2026. Signage will direct drivers on California Avenue to a marked detour route that includes Southeast 10th Avenue, Southeast Adams Street and Southeast 21st Street.
$1 million letter of intent approved for Maner Conference Centre renovations
KDOT will keep I-70 open for the entirety of the project, aside from the weekend closure that will be announced later in the year. However, drivers can expect to see ramp closures, lane shifts and lane reductions in the later phases of the project. The highway will have work zone speed limit of 50 mph.
Workers with King Construction Co. will be on site during daylight hours Monday through Friday, along with Saturdays as needed for this $8 million project. You can learn more about the project online by clicking here.
