TOPEKA (KSNT) — The Topeka Zoo transformed into an after-hours hotspot Friday, April 25, as its annual “Roar and Pour” event returned, blending wildlife, wine and community support.
The 21-and-over fundraiser, now about a decade old, drew hundreds of guests to stroll through zoo exhibits in a unique evening setting. Attendees sampled food and drinks from local vendors while live music added to the atmosphere, turning a typical zoo visit into a lively night out.
But organizers say the event serves a much bigger purpose than entertainment.

“It takes almost $10,000 a month to feed our animals. So that’s a pretty big grocery bill, if you will,” said Cynthia McCarvel, Chief Advancement Officer. “And so we’re feeling the pinch, just like everybody in the community is feeling the pinch with their own grocery bills. So we do everything that we can to raise as much money so we can do the best that we can in taking care of the animals.”
Events like Roar and Pour help the zoo offset rising costs while continuing to provide care for its animals and maintain exhibits for the public.
For many attendees, the night also offered a chance to connect — not just with wildlife, but with others in the community — in a setting that’s a little different from the usual daytime visit.
