EMPORIA (KSNT) – The ‘Bods complete the Turnpike Tussle sweep.
Washburn softball (35-18, 12-12 MIAA) defeated the Emporia State Lady Hornets (28-17, 14-10 MIAA) in Game 1 5-4, and in Game 2 7-6.
Dalaney Anderson kicked things off with a two-run home run in the top of the first to get Washburn out to a 2-0 lead.
Emporia State’s Elina Bartlett flies out to right to drive in Avery Brewer and cut in to Washburn’s lead, 2-1.
Silver Lake’s Taryn Burkhardt would follow that up with a single, advancing to second base on an error. Addison Callaway and Brynley Smith score the unearned runs, and take the 3-2 lead.
Brooke Flewelling, the Holton High alum, launched a solo homer out to right to extend the Lady Hornet lead to 4-2.
Washburn’s Makenzie Sais, the all-time MIAA steals leader, laced an RBI single up the middle to score Madi Moore. The Ichabods trail by a run.
Taylor Brees kept the line moving with an RBI single of her own to bring Maddie McGee home and the game is tied 4-4 at the end of seven innings.
Taybor Moss wastes no time getting one out to left for an RBI single. Kate Dolan scores the go-ahead run, and Washburn leads 5-4.
Jenna Sprague shuts the Lady Hornets down in the bottom of the frame, and Washburn gets the Game 1 win.
The Lady Hornets opened up the scoring in Game 2 in the bottom of the third with a solo homer from Sydney Wagner to put ESU up 1-0.
In the fourth, Rossville native Kinsey Perine flies out to right to bring in Leslie Ramos to score, increasing the lead to 2-0.
A fielding error sees Bartlett come home in the same inning and the Hornets lead 3-0.
In the top of the fifth, Madi Moore is hit by a pitch with the bases juiced to walk in the Ichabods first run of the game.
The ‘Bods would score five more runs in the fifth off a pair of singles, a double and a fielder’s choice.
Emporia State is quick to respond with a two RBI double from Ramos in the bottom of the frame.
Perine drives in Ramos off a single to tie the game at 6-6.
Anderson would open up the scoring in Game 1 and close it out in Game 2 with an RBI single to retake the lead, 7-6.
Sadie Walker held off the Hornet bats in the bottom of the seventh to complete the sweep for Washburn.
No. 8 seed Washburn will take on No. 9 seed Missouri Western in the opening round of the MIAA Tournament on May 6. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
No. 4 Emporia State will start their conference tournament run on May 7 against No. 5 Central Missouri. That game is set to start at 1:30 p.m.
The MIAA Tournament will take place at Trussler Sports Complex.
