TOPEKA (KSNT) – Hundreds of Kansas State University students came together Monday to honor one of their own.
Sigma Chi at K-State held a memorial and a celebration of life for 19-year-old Jake Fleischaker, who died in April after suffering injuries falling out of a window at the Sigma Chi fraternity house. Students filled the field, with some students who honored and recognized Fleischaker’s life speaking on a podium about his mark on the campus, before he died.
“It feels weird being here today without Jack by my side standing next to me,” said Thomas Mitchell, Sigma Chi president. “But I know he would want us to remember him through the good times, and still feel his presence. Every story we share every laughter reminds us of him.”
Fleischaker was remembered not just by his close friends, but by the community that continued to show up for him. Mitchell said at the memorial that any memories with Fleischaker is something he is more thankful for.
“It’s been hard trying to take in that Jack is not gone but in heaven watching over us. I’m always starting to learn and be more thankful for all the incredible memories I could’ve made with Jack.”
Friends of Fleischaker who spoke on the podium emphasized how much energy, kindness and inclusivity he brought. Despite his death, many present at the memorial mentioned how much love they felt through Fleischaker’s life.
“We’ll continue to tell your stories, to laugh the way you made us laugh, and show up for each other the way you always showed up for us,” Mitchell said. “You meant more to us than words can even fully express. Your impact will stay with us through the rest of our lives.”
