TOPEKA (KSNT) – A local shopping center is temporarily closed Tuesday after a reported small electrical fire earlier in the morning.
West Ridge Mall general manager and director of operations Casey Richardson told 27 News in a written statement that a small electrical fire occurred at the shopping center on the morning of May 5. She said the fire was quickly contained, with damage limited to a non-public facing area of the mall.
Richardson said no one was injured following the fire. However, mall staff decided to temporarily close the shopping center to assess the damage and make sure the space is ready for the public to reenter.
“The decision to close the mall for the remainder of the day is directly related to the incident,” Richardson said. “While the impact was contained, we are taking a proactive approach to ensure the building is thoroughly assessed, any residual smoke is addressed, and the facility is in top operating condition before reopening.”

The Dillard’s and Furniture Mall of Kansas spaces at the mall will remain open and operate normally Tuesday. Richardson thanked the quick responses from local emergency workers who responded to the fire and is looking forward to reopening the mall to shoppers soon.
