TOPEKA (KSNT) – Federal health officials report a Wisconsin company is recalling an eczema cream product this week as it may be contaminated with a bacteria that can cause staph infections.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on May 12 that Pharmacal is recalling a single lot of “MG217 Multi-symptom Treatment Cream & Skin Protectant Eczema Cream.” The company is recalling this product as it is contaminated with staphylococcus aureus.
The FDA reports this type of bacteria can result in a range of infections that could even lead to life-threatening situations for some people. Individuals who have weakened immune systems, skin injuries or skin disorders, are at an increased risk of infections.

Staphylococcus aureus is a type of germ present in around 30% of people’s noses and usually cause no issues, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). However, this bacteria can lead to staph infections and more serious infections in the bloodstream, endocarditis and pneumonia.
Pharmacal reports that it has yet to receive any reports of adverse events in connection to the recalled skin care product. The products were distributed nationwide through wholesale and retail stores like H.E. Butt Grocery Company and internet distributors like Amazon.

Pharmacal is currently notifying its distributors of the recall and arranging for the return of the product included in the recall. People who purchased the recalled skin care product are encouraged to stop using it and throw it away.
