TOPEKA (KSNT) – Weather officials have issued an extreme heat warning for Topeka and surrounding areas in northeast Kansas Tuesday.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued an extreme heat warning on Aug. 11 for multiple counties and populated areas in northeast Kansas. The warning will remain in effect until 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14.
Weather officials report that dangerously hot conditions are being forecasted with heat index values of 105 to 110 degrees each afternoon. People are at risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke while the warning is in effect. The NWS said the current weather warning impacts people living in the following counties in northeast Kansas:
- Cloud
- Clay
- Riley
- Pottawatomie
- Jackson
- Jefferson
- Geary
- Morris
- Wabaunsee
- Shawnee
- Douglas
- Lyon
- Osage
- Coffey

The NWS encourages people to wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothes, limit strenuous outdoor activities to the early morning or evening hours and to stay hydrated. People are encouraged to avoid leaving children and pets unattended inside vehicles.
KSNT 27 News StormTrack Meteorologist Ely Millard forecasted on Aug. 11 that people in northeast Kansas should expect hot temperatures during the afternoon hours. However, he said a cold front is expected to enter the region by the end of the week.
