EMPORIA (KSNT) – The Hornets closed the weekend with a ranked win.
Emporia State soccer (1-0-1) earned a come-from-behind 3-2 win on Saturday over No. 21 Maryville.
“We felt we didn’t execute fully on our game plan. It was one of those games where we needed to get the details right and fix the problems we identified,” Emporia State head coach Jane Grimley-Gunn told 27 Sports. “With 45 to go, it was in our control, and happy to see us get the win.”
Maryville opened the scoring in the 26th minute before Emporia State freshman midfielder Ava Huston equalized the game with a goal off the right post. She was assisted by Madeline Bracy.
The Topeka native and Seaman High School graduate scored her first-ever collegiate goal with the shot.
“It feels good to win an in-season game,” Huston said. “We’ve been working hard, and it feels good to get the win.”
The Hornets took the lead in the second half as Megan Kephart scored her second goal of the season.
ESU made it 3-1 in the 84th minute with a header from Ruby Ryan, assisted by Dahlia Placino.
Maryville would pull one back, but it wouldn’t be enough as Emporia State walked away with a 3-2 win.
“Getting our first win at home to open the year feels good,” Kephart said. “Getting that first goal to tie the game gave us the energy to power us through.”
Emporia State is back home on Wednesday, Sept. 2, to host Rockhurst. Game is set for 4 p.m.
