WAMEGO (KSNT) — Introducing the Wamego flag football team.
For the first time in program history, Wamego will boast a girls’ flag football team.
Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) officially sanctioned girls’ flag football as a varsity high school sport starting with the 2026–27 school year.
The Red Raiders are already living up to the Boomtown name—with fireworks.
“This team is amazing, and this sport will be a staple in Kansas going forward,” senior Eva Lull told 27 Sports. “This showcase only made us better, and we’re going to have a great season.”
Wamego held a showcase on Friday night, displaying their football team’s from the 4th grade level, all the way to high school, which of course included the flag football team.
A lot of the girls grew up watching football and now with the opportunity, were excited to be on the field for the first time in front of their fans.
“The energy on Friday nights is so amazing, and our school has a lot of pride in it,” senior Ella Yakel said. “Now feeling that pride from everyone else while I’m on the field is an amazing feeling.”
The team knows they’re setting the mark for the future of the sport in the state of Kansas.
“I’m hoping this sport will grow more and more. Even though we’re a small-town Wamego, we’re still big, we show effort and we do our best for our community,” senior Rachel Barber noted. “This is going to start something across the state.”
“This team is setting a foundation for years to come,” Wamego head coach Weston Moody told 27 Sports. “Girls that are playing flag football at the third or fourth grade level can now look and know they can play this at the high school level. Now they have opportunities.”
